Brita® Faucet Filtration FAQ

Where can I purchase a Brita® Faucet Filtration System?

Locate your local and online retailers that carry Brita products.

What do Brita® Faucet Filtration Systems remove from tap water?

Brita® Faucet Filtration Systems with Advanced Features (Model FF-100) and Brita® Faucet Filtration System (Model OPFF-100)
The Brita® Faucet Filter removes microbiological cryptosporidium and giardia. It also reduces lead, TTHM, VOCs, lindane (pesticide), 2,4-D, alachlor, atrazine (herbicide), chlorine (taste and odor) and sediment1. For more information about the impurities that Brita® Faucet Filters reduce, including any health risks they may help avoid confusion.

How does the 2-stage Brita® Faucet Filtration System work?

Brita® Faucet Filtration System (Model OPFF-100), Brita® Faucet Filtration System with Advanced Features (Model FF-100)

When you turn on your faucet, water first passes through stage 1: A non-woven screen around the filter to trap sediment. Then the water flows through stage 2: A compressed block of carbon and zeolite, reducing chlorine (taste and odor) and lead.

If I’m having trouble attaching my Brita® Faucet Filtration, do I need an adapter?

Determine if your faucet has threads on the outside or inside. If on the outside, you probably do not need to use an adapter. The base system can most likely be attached directly to the faucet (consult your User Guide). Pick up the base unit, align with the faucet threads and carefully attempt to connect the system to the faucet. If the threads are on the outside, but you can’t get the collar onto the faucet, you may need a special adapter. To receive a special adapter free of charge, call 1-800-24-BRITA or 1-800-387-6940 (CANADA).

If the faucet has inside threads, try using one of the two adapters that come with the system, and attach the base system to the adapter. If neither one of the adapters provided will attach to the faucet, you may need a special adapter. To receive a special adapter free of charge, call 1-800-24-BRITA or 1-800-387-6940 (CANADA).

Should I soak the Brita® Faucet Filtration system filter before inserting it?

No. However, the system does need to be flushed for five minutes to activate the filter media and remove any carbon dust. The 100-gallon filter life begins AFTER flushing for five minutes so you are not wasting filter life by the flushing process.

Does the Brita® Faucet Filtration System remove bacteria from the water?

No. However, it does remove microbiological cysts—cryptosporidium and giardia by mechanical or “barrier” means. These are cysts that are about 3 to 4 microns in size. The filters have been designed with pore sizes smaller than these cysts and therefore act as barriers preventing them from passing through the filter.

How often should I change my filter in the Brita® Faucet Filtration system?

Brita® Faucet Filtration Systems with Advanced Features (Model FF-100) and Brita® Faucet Filtration System (Model OPFF-100)
Filter replacement is essential for the Brita® Faucet Filter to perform as represented. Filters should be replaced every 100 gallons of water. A built-in filter replacement indicator will remind you when it's time to change filters.

Brita® Faucet Filtration System (Model OPFF-100)
Filters should be replaced every 100 gallons of water. A built-in Filter Replacement Indicator will remind you when it’s time to change filters.

Brita® Faucet Filtration System with Advanced Features (Model FF-100)
Filters should be replaced every 100 gallons of water or every four months, whichever comes first. A built-in electronic LED Filter Replacement Indicator will remind you when it’s time to change filters.

Is it okay to use the Brita® Faucet Filtration System with well water?

The filter is intended to be used only with municipally treated tap water or well water that is regularly tested to be microbiologically safe.

What is the shelf life of an unused Brita® Faucet Filter?

The shelf life of a filter is indefinite as long as it is stored in its sealed Brita® bag and has not been damaged. Filters should be stored in a cool, dry place.

Will Brita® Faucet Filters dry up if I don’t use them for a while?

If your Brita® Faucet Filter has not been used for several days, you should let water run through the filter for 30 seconds before use, in order to wet and re-activate the system’s filter.

Is it okay to use hot or boiling water in a Brita® Faucet Filtration System?

No. Do not filter water that is over 100°F/38°C. Hot water may release some contaminants that could be found in your tap water. Also, running hot water through the unit can severely diminish the system’s filtration abilities. If this happens, you should replace your Brita® faucet filter to ensure you enjoy all of Brita®’s filtration benefits.

What are the Brita® Faucet Filtration System filter ingredients?

The filter media is made of activated carbon, a zeolite that acts as a lead scavenger and a binder that holds all the ingredients together in block form.

Can I use either a white or chrome replacement filter?

White and chrome replacement filters are designed to fit the Brita® Faucet Filtration System (Model OPFF-100) and the Brita® Faucet Filtration System with Advanced Features (Model FF-100). Mix and match to customize your look!
