Product Maintenance

All our products are built to last a long time. With a little care and attention along the way you can help ensure your Brita® product lives up to its full potential. We’ve also included details on when to replace your filter, how to read your filter change indicators, and details about your product warranty.

Product Care

Cleaning and care

Cleaning

Brita® Pitchers and Dispensers are very low maintenance when it comes to upkeep and care. You can simply hand wash the lid and reservoir with a mild detergent. Brita filter bottles are dishwasher safe. Remove the filter before cleaning your Brita Bottle Water Filtration System. All plastic components (bottle, cap, mouth-piece) can be washed in the dishwasher (top rack only) or by hand with a mild soap.

If you have a Brita® Chrome Pitcher lid, wipe with a soft sponge soaked in a solution of one teaspoon of white vinegar in a cup of water.

For Pattern Series Pitchers, if water gets trapped under sleeve, let pitcher air dry upside-down at room temperature.

Brita® Bottle: The bottle and large screw-on cap are dishwasher safe (top shelf only). Remove the filter before washing. Or like pitchers and dispensers, you can hand wash the Brita® bottle with a mild detergent.

Filter care

Filters should be kept in the sealed Brita® bag and stored in a cool, dry place until you’re ready to use them.

For pitcher filters, remember to soak the filter for 15 minutes prior to using. It is important that the bottom of the filter be in contact with the filtered water to prevent the filter from drying out. If the filter dries out, resoak for 15 minutes.

If your Brita® Faucet Filter has not been used for several days, you should let water run through the filter for 30 seconds before use, in order to wet and reactivate the system’s filter.

For your Soft-Squeeze Brita® Bottle, squeeze one full bottle of water through the filter before use to activate. For your Hard-Sided Brita® Bottle, rinse under cold water for 15 seconds. It is normal for black carbon dust to appear.

Things to avoid

  • Hot water: Don’t filter water that is over 100°F/38°C. Hot water may release some contaminants that could be found in your tap water. Also, running hot water through the unit can severely diminish the system’s filtration abilities. If this happens, you should replace your Brita® faucet filter to ensure you enjoy all of Brita®’s filtration benefits.
  • Well water: Don’t use faucet filtration with well water that isn’t regularly tested to be microbiologically safe. This filter is intended to be used only with municipally treated tap water or well water that is regularly tested.

Replacing your filter

For optimum performance, it’s important to change your Brita® filter on a regular basis. Fortunately, Brita® replacement filters are inexpensive.

Replacement timeframe

  • Pitchers and Dispensers: Replace filters every 40 gallons or every two months for the average family. Measure the amount of water that you typically put into the upper reservoir. Once you do this, you can easily estimate the number of reservoir fills that roughly equals 40 gallons of usage. For example, when you fill up the reservoir you typically put in 1/4 gallon each time. That means you need to fill up the reservoir roughly 4 times to filter 1 gallon of water. To reach the 40-gallon filter life, refill it 160 times (4 fills per gallon x 40 gal).

  • Faucet Filter Systems: Model OPFF-100: Filter lasts for 94 gallons. Model SAFF-100: Filter lasts for 100 gallons. Model FF-100: Filter lasts for 100 gallons or 4 months, whichever comes first.

  • Brita® Bottles: Replace filter every 40 gallons or roughly every two months.

Brita® sells filters in grocery, drug, discount, specialty, hardware and warehouse club stores. To buy now from an online retailer, visit the Brita.com Replacement Filters section. To find an offline retailer, please visit our where to buy page.

Attaching your Brita® faucet filtration system

Determine if your faucet has threads on the outside or inside. If on the outside, you probably do not need to use an adapter. The base system can most likely be attached directly to the faucet (consult the appropriate user guides   or  ). Pick up the base unit, align with the faucet threads and carefully attempt to connect the system to the faucet. If the threads are on the outside, but you can’t get the collar onto the faucet, you may need a special adapter. To receive a special adapter free of charge, call 1-800-24-BRITA or 1-800-387-6940 (CANADA).

If the faucet has inside threads, try using one of the two adapters that come with the system, and attach the base system to the adapter. If neither one of the adapters provided will attach to the faucet, you may need a special adapter. To receive a special adapter free of charge, call 1-800-24-BRITA or 1-800-387-6940 (CANADA).

Soaking and flushing filters

Pitchers

For pitchers, you should soak your filter before inserting it:

  • number 1Wash hands with soap and water, then remove filter from filter bag.
  • number 2Soak the filter upright in cold water for 15 minutes.
  • number 3Hold filter upright under cold, running tap water for a few seconds.

Faucet filters

Faucet filters don’t require soaking, however, the system does need to be flushed for five minutes to activate the filter media and remove any carbon dust. The 100-gallon filter life† begins AFTER flushing for five minutes so you are not wasting filter life by the flushing process.

Brita® bottles

Bottle filters don't require soaking. For your Soft-Squeeze Brita® Bottle, squeeze one full bottle of water through the filter before use to activate. For your Hard-Sided Brita® Bottle, rinse under cold water for 15 seconds. It is normal for black carbon dust to appear.

Replacement parts

Although built to last, Brita® products can crack or break due to a variety of unfortunate circumstances. The good news is that Brita® can send you the replacement part you need should your water filtration system parts crack or break. In fact, some parts may be covered under your Brita® warranty.

Brita® can replace the following types of parts

For pitchers we can replace lids, reservoirs, and the pitcher bodies.

Setting Up & Reading Indicators

Setting up your indicator

Setting up an LED Memo Indicator (Complete Pitchers only)

  • number 1Every time you replace a filter, press the RESET button and hold it down for 5 seconds.
  • number 2As you hold the button, red, yellow and green lights will blink simultaneously. Release the RESET button when only the green light blinks.

  • number 4After 6 week of use or 485 pours, the yellow light will blink reminding the user that the filter needs to be changed soon.
  • number 5After 2 months or 640 pours, the red light will blink reminding the user that the filter needs to be replaced. Replace the filter and reset the indicator by holding the RESET button down for 5 seconds. Filter performance is not certified after 40 gallons.
