Pittsburgh, PA: A Comprehensive Approach to Lead-Free Water

Community-first solutions for safer drinking water

In response to elevated lead levels in drinking water, Pittsburgh Water launched its Community Lead Response program, a citywide initiative focused on replacing lead service lines (LSLs), distributing certified water filters, and engaging residents every step of the way. With a goal to eliminate all residential LSLs by 2027, the program is a model for how utilities can act quickly and equitably to protect public health.

Immediate protection through filter distribution

To reduce lead exposure while replacements are underway, Pittsburgh Water provides NSF-certified water filter pitchers and replacement cartridges to residents at no cost. Filters are distributed when a lead line is disturbed and maintained for six months after replacement. Residents can easily request a kit online, by phone, or by email, ensuring access is simple and barrier-free.

Transparency, education, and trust

Pittsburgh Water keeps residents informed through a public-facing interactive map, free water testing kits, and community meetings. Educational materials help residents understand the risks of lead exposure and the steps being taken to address it. This commitment to transparency has helped build trust and encourage participation across the city.
