Replace your Brita® Original Filter every 40 gallons, or about every 2 months for most households.§ If you have hard water, you may need to change filters more often. When you install a new filter, use your built-in electronic filter indicator or sticker calendar indicator so you’ll know exactly when to replace it. See how often to change other types of Brita® filters here.
- How do I prepare and change the filter in my Brita® pitcher or dispenser?
- Rinse your Brita® Original Filter with cold water for 15 seconds.
- Insert the filter into the reservoir by lining up the groove in the filter with the ridge in the reservoir. Press firmly for a tight seal.
- Add cold tap water. For pitchers, discard your first three pitchers of filtered water; for dispensers, discard your first dispenser of filtered water (or use it to water plants).

How the Brita Original Filter Works
Original Filters use coconut-based activated carbon plus ion exchange resin in a housing made without BPA to filter out contaminants which may be found in tap water, while preserving certain healthy minerals^ and electrolytes. Contaminants reduced include chlorine (taste and odor), copper, cadmium and mercury.*
Key Contaminants Reduced
- Chlorine (Taste & Odor)
- Mercury
- Copper
- Cadmium
*See certifications. Substances reduced may not be in all users’ water. ^Minerals naturally occurring in tap water. May not be present in all users’ water. Brita® filters keep a healthy level of fluoride, a water additive that promotes strong teeth.
